The Word “Maharlika,†an ancient Tagalog word, To further elucidate the meaning of Maharlika in the old Tagalog language, the Maharlika class served as warrior-vassals of their datu and were required to provide military service and weapons in times of war at their own expense, in exchange for a share in the spoils of battle whereby one-fifth went to the Maginoo or royal class and four-fifth to the Maharlika who shared the loot with their own warriors. In modern Filipino, however, the term has come to mean “royal nobilityâ€, which was actually restricted to the hereditary Maginoo class.
